We
are well situated for touring the Lincolnshire
Wolds an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
and the Lincolnshire coast and Fens. The well
known resort of Skegness is 12 miles away but
the coast has far more to offer than this traditional
holiday resort alone. Stretching from the Humber
to the Wash, the sandy coastline combines a
mix of seaside destinations and the solitude
of nature. Beautiful secluded sand dunes and
beaches stretch north from Skegness taking in
the resorts of Sutton on Sea and Mablethorpe,
while a little further up the coast is Donna
Nook, the venue for one of nature’s great
spectacles when seals come ashore in November
to have their pups. Travelling south along the
coast from Skegness you will find two significant
bird and nature reserves. Gibraltar Point on
the north flank of the Wash is an area of unspoilt
coastline with important plant and animal communities.
It is of international scientific interest comprising
sandy and muddy sea-shore, sand dune, saltmarsh
and freshwater habitats. The reserve extends
a distance of about three miles along the Lincolnshire
coast from the southern end of Skegness to the
entrance of the Wash. A little further along
the coast lies RSPB Freiston Shore, an individually
designed and created lagoon, dotted with islands
and overlooked by an observation hide, providing
great views of some of the birds of the Wash
- avocets and shelducks in summer, brent geese
and huge flocks of roosting waders in winter.

The
Wolds offer a complete contrast to the coast
and Fens. The glorious rolling hills of the
Wolds are a treat for cyclists and walkers.
You can go at your own pace and take in the
beautiful scenery and tranquillity. Many people
are amazed by the Wolds (they are definitely
Lincolnshire’s best kept secret, rivalling
the Yorkshire Wolds for beauty).
If
you are after a less energetic break, there
are numerous fishing lakes in the area.
We
are ideally situated for touring many interesting
market towns. Horncastle (10 miles), one of
the country’s best antiques towns; Louth
(14 miles), known as the capital of the Wolds
and a “foodie” haven; Caistor (36
miles), an attractive Roman walled market town
on the western escarpment of the Wolds; Alford
(6 miles), has a summer craft market and is
home to a dramatic five-sailed windmill as well
as Alford Manor House – one of England’s
largest thatched manor houses; Woodhall Spa
(16 miles), an Edwardian spa town on the southern
edge of the Wolds where you will find the unique
Kinema in the Woods, build in 1922, still using
back projection and an original Compton organ;
Wainfleet (15 miles), the home of family brewery
Batemans who have been producing award-winning
beers since 1874 . The city of Lincoln is only
32 miles away with excellent shopping, a lively
arts scene and one of Europe’s most stunning
cathedrals (used in the filming of the Da Vinci
Code) as well as a Norman castle and Roman gates.

The
area was also the birthplace or home of several
people who left their mark on history. Alfred
Lord Tennyson was born at Somersby (6 miles).
His “haunt of ancient peace” is
said to be red-bricked Gunby Hall (4 miles);
Matthew Flinders, the first circumnavigator
of Australia, was married in Partney church
to Ann Chappelle and a memorial stone cut from
Port Philip Bay stands in the churchyard. Sir
John Franklin, the Arctic explorer and discovered
of the Northwest Passage across America, was
born in Spilsby (1.5 miles). Botanist Sir Joseph
Banks, who sailed with Captain Cook on the Endeavour,
was born in Horncastle (10 miles).

For
those interested in speed, Cadwell Park is just
12 miles away. If speed on four legs is more
your cup of tea, why not enjoy a day at the
races at Market Rasen (28 miles). Air plane
enthusiasts will find the area of particular
interest. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
Visitor Centre is at RAF Coningsby (16 miles).
The Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at
East Kirkby (5 miles) is the only place in the
country to see a Lancaster bomber on its original
airfield and ride in it! The Dambusters flew
from RAF Scampton, RAF Conningsby, RAF Woodhall
Spa and RAF Waddington.
